Beware!

Novel by Richard Laymon (USA) 1985.

An invisible man robs and murders in the small town of Oasis, near Tucson, then rapes local newspaper reported Lacey Allen. She escapes and hooks up with writer Scott Bradley. Meanwhile Matthew Dukane, private investigator and the 'real life' basis for Scott's fictional hero, Charlie Dane, gets involved with a religious cult who believe themselves invulnerable and immortal. Led by the beautiful Laveda, they swear to kill Dukane, and en route to him, find the invisible man, also high up on their wanted list.

The author himself calls this "maniacal and vile" and he has a point. With two fiendishly interconnecting plot strands, Laymon has produced a well constructed, solidly plotted thriller that is violent and often sadistic, always fascinating. The plot twists that we have come to expect after Out are the Lights and Night Show are still evident, and the pace follows in the fast manner that we are accustomed to. Far stranger than any of its predecessors, Laymon nevertheless copes admirably with his outré concepts, leaving us his best book up to this point.
