Deadwalk

Novel by Ron Goulart (USA) 1976.

Vampirella and the Great Pendragon end up on the Caribbean island of Cote de Soleil in search of two of Pendragon's relatives, newly missing persons and, as it turns out, victims of the very Cult of Chaos that Vampirella has sworn to seek out and destroy. Once there, they team up with William Carlos Zanka, local private eye and habitual womaniser; and between the three of them and the ever-present van Helsings, manage to cause more than mere problems for the Cult. Also the number of vampire killings in Los Angeles is on the up and Vampirella is interested in the reasons why. Needless to say, she uncovers the realities behind the Temple of Tranquillity and the latest rock sensation, Devastator. Meanwhile, Adam van Helsing and Zanka are in London searching out evil doings there.

Third in his Vampirella series, begun by Bloodstalk (1975), and as with the previous offering, On Alien Wings, there's nothing particularly new here that wasn't in the original, but it's just as much fun to read. Hair-raising thrills and spills, lots of deadpan humour, great characters, lots of people with names beginning with the letter Z, beautiful vampires, evil demons: you name it, it's here. Just don't expect literature.
