Death Dream

Novel by Graham Masterton (Scotland) 1988.

Nine-year-old Lenny Woods has a problem: some sort of demon is lurking inside him, every now and again popping out of his body to slice people up. The first two victims are his stepmother, who is shredded; and his father, who becomes confined to a wheelchair. Two policemen, who conveniently believe in the reality of psychic phenomena, arrange for Lenny to be tested in a department for paranormal psychology; but eventually the problem becomes great enough to warrant the help of new Night Warriors, who are immediately recruited and sent into Lenny's dreams to combat the demon.

Second in the Night Warriors trilogy, this suffers from the same problems as the original. Night Warriors itself gets away with it, being written with the usual Masterton panache and being a new concept, but unfortunately the concept doesn't travel well and Death Dream fails drastically. Every plot needs to be believable, at the very least with some sort of minimal attempt from the reader to help it along, but the Night Warriors really stretch credulity beyond acceptable limits. Sadly disappointing.
