Scifi Classics

Treeline Films are usually pretty solid in their selections, but this time round they outdid themselves. With a few notable exceptions, this is almost a textbook of Mystery Science Theater 3000 source material. These are some of the worst films ever made, though there are definite omissions. There's no Plan 9 from Outer Space, which I always enjoy anyway; there's no Manos, the Hands of Fate, commonly regarded by bad film afficionados as the worst of them all; and for some reason The Beast of Yucca Flats, the worst film I've yet seen, was included in the Horror Classics box set instead.

However, we can revel in the sheer awfulness of films like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Robot Monster and The Incredible Petrified World. Most of the great directors of bad cinema are here, from Jerry Warren to Arch Hall Sr to Larry Buchanan to Billy Wilder's far less talented brother W Lee. There's embarrassing star turns, like Richard Burr in Bride of the Gorilla, Richard Kiel in Eegah and Brandon Lee in Laser Mission. There's even international dreck, with plenty of Italian and Japanese movies too.

There's not much of a quality side here at all, but I did enjoy the earliest film of them all, the animal training jungle epic from 1934 called The Lost Jungle. Some serious industry names are represented too, though not with their best work. I'm sure Peter Bogdanovich doesn't want to talk about Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women and Edgar G Ulmer and Roger Corman have had better moments too.
