No music reviews today. I ran out of time with work, convention business and checking out a local venue, so here's a gig review instead.
That venue was The Lunchbox in Phoenix around 41st & McDowell, which is a small but friendly place. I'll happily go back.
The headliners tonight were Loserfur, a local stoner metal band who sounded great, even being too loud (did I just say that?), with too much feedback and with the bass overpowering the drums and guitar. I've seen one of their videos before, but would like to check out their recorded output.
In support were Smokey Mirror, who were absolutely fantastic. A heavy psychedelic blues band from Dallas, TX, they were why most of us were there and they rocked the place. Sounding like a cross between Aeroblus and Black Sabbath, with some Motörhead and even some Allman Brothers too, they gave it everything like they were playing in front of 20,000 people who had paid $200 to get in, rather than 35 people for $8 cover. Their energy was insane and I have to say that their set was the most enjoyable I've seen in years. When these guys come to your town, go see them. Trust me.
Opening up were Black Habit, an interesting duo, a gentleman on vocals and guitar, and a young lady on drums and viola. Yeah, you heard right. I liked them a lot. After them were the gloriously named Stripper Witch from my neck of the woods, west Phoenix. This was only their third gig but they're doing the right things and they have promise. I'd be interested in seeing them grow.
Thanks to everyone for putting on this show. I wish there had been a larger audience but those of us who were there appreciated it.
