Crabshell, Kingsbridge

by Edward Keyes

October sun and shadow pattern the car park.
Raised eye meets middle-distance tiered houses.
Beyond, church spire slices clustered trees
on blue horizon. Pleasing, familiar scene.

Yet, as we lunch, interior landscape dominant.
Litter of memories shadows sandwiches,
prospect of beach, dog-joy, meeting with friends.
Infilling of the past induces sadness
distanced, not spectacular, grey blot
  on outer brightness.
