Only Ferrets

by LadyRobin

Even now tears flood my eyes;
I can still feel your warmth as I held you for the last time.
It is mother earth who will now hold you to her bosom;
She, above all else will I trust to caress your sweet body.

Where does your spirit fly my little one?
A bump in the night and I close my eyes,
Visions of you scampering I see;
Even in death you bring a smile to my lips.

Another rescue beckons me.
I arrive at the door of another nameless dwelling;
Ready to transport my 30th - no - 40th spirit away;
Ah... I see we have two friends here;
All packed for a quick departure.

What is that I see in your eyes?
Sorrow?
Is it because you were happy here?
Joy?
Is it because you were not?

'Fear not little ones, for I am here to protect thee.'
Your coat will once more shine,
Your eyes will once more gleam,
And until Earth cradles your shell, you will be celebrated.

I hardly notice the two legged creatures;
They seem so eager to explain their actions -
'We just can't keep them anymore'
What is it this time?
Too messy?
Too odorous?
With child?
No time?

I play my broken record of reassurances;
And as we depart, I hear somewhere in the past...
'After all, they are only ferrets.'
A knowing grin spreads across my face.
I look down to curious faces:

'But we know better, don't we?'
