3 Jan 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesLive concert from the archives: Y+T from the Reading Festival, 1982. Session: Kooga. Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 15-18): Stuart Pontin of Wakefield. Comments about Phil Lynott who is still in intensive care at the time of this show date the show to either 27 Dec 1985 or 3 Jan 1986 (he was hospitalised on 25 Dec 1985 and died on 4 Jan 1986). Comments before Lie Back and Enjoy It suggest that we're soon after Christmas. Best guess: 3 Jan 1986. |
10 Jan 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSpecial show dedicated to the memory of Phil Lynott, who died on 4 Jan 1986. It featured interview footage and Thin Lizzy songs. Date is confirmed because it was the first Friday after Phil Lynott's death and it's mentioned in the following show. |
17 Jan 1986This show listing is not complete, as it's missing the middle.
NotesSessions: Black Rose (repeat), Streets on Fire (new). News after the show covers the evacuation of Aden, partly on the Britannia, thus dating the show to 17 Jan 1986. Tommy also mentions that AC/DC are live on stage in London during the show; that would be their 17 Jan 1986 Wembley Arena show. This is one week after the Phil Lynott special, dating that show to 10 Jan 1986. Tommy mentions that he'll be re-broadcasting archive material starting following week. Intro also mentions that there will be tracks by Iron Maiden, UFO and Dio. Tracks in italics are from Iain Kennedy's recording. The Unknown track sounds indie and ought to be titled Might as Well. |
24 Jan 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesLive in concert from the archives: Rose Tattoo from the Reading Festival in 1981 (tracks 7-13; the following track 14 is a studio B-side). Repeat session by Tormé. Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 18 to 21): Jeffrey Gay of Chulmleigh. News after the show about Leon Brittan's resignation over the Westland Affair dates the show to 24 Jan 1986. |
31 Jan 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSessions: Spider and Iron Maiden (first broadcast back in Nov 1979). Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 13-16): Fleming Lord of Oswestry. Rush is for the astronauts who died in the Challenger space shuttle disaster on 'Tuesday of this month'. The disaster was 28 Jan 1986, so presumably this show dates to 31 Jan 1986. |
7 Feb 1986I can't provide this show listing, but the BBC Genome lists this show as including a repeat of the session by Damacles that was first aired on 6 Dec 1985. |
14 Feb 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSession: Statetrooper (new). Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 13 to 17): Katherine Hyatt of Swansea. Date confirmed: 14 Feb 1986. It's Valentine's Day. Tommy also references the first broadcast date of the Statetrooper session during its repeat broadcast on 2 May 1986. |
21 Feb 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesRepeat session by So What? Live from the archives: Slade from the Reading Festival 1980. Next Friday is the Tube's Heavy Metal Special. BFI dates this to 28 Feb 1986, thus this show is 21 Feb 1986. The AC/DC live track is from Live from the Atlantic Studios. Intro also mentions a track by Alice Cooper. |
28 Feb 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSessions: Elixir (brand new) and Pink Floyd (out of the archives). Tommy talks about the Pink Floyd masters being lost and the copy being broadcast was from a recording of a previous medium wave broadcast. He also suggests a vague date of July or August 1968 for the tracks on side A, though I think he corrects that as I'm turning the tape over, but modern research (lots of that for Pink Floyd) suggests that these date to 19 or 20 Dec 1967 (even the roio pages vary). Tommy dates the track on side B to 1969. Comments during the show date the show exactly to 28 Feb 1986. Also, Iain Kennedy's recording includes the news, which reports on the assassination of former Swedish prime minister Olof Palme. The Vow Wow track sounds eerily familiar, because they re-recorded the chorus of this with new words as a jingle for The Friday Rock Show. Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 12-15): Navid Saeed of Nottingham. Two weeks later will be a Wembley concert with Yes. |
7 Mar 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSessions by Kooga (recorded last Nov) and Diamond Head (recorded on 29 Oct 1980, first broadcast on 28 Nov 1980). Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 9-12): Derek Gladding. Motörhead comment by Tommy. 'Never get anywhere. Too loud!' This was mentioned in another show. Date confirmed. News after the show includes Vickers & Cammell Laird being taken over by management and workers (Mar 1986), the hunt for two men who raped a vicar's daughter (Jill Saward, 6 Mar 1986) and a bad first day for England in the Trinidad test (7 Mar 1986) Tommy announces that next week will be a repeat of the 2 hour Yes concert that originally opened the Friday Rock Show. |
14 Mar 1986I can't provide this show listing but the BBC Genome backs up comments at the end of the 7 Mar 1986 show that it's a repeat of the Yes concert that was first broadcast in 1979. |
21 Mar 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSessions - Wild Strawberries (new) and Spider (repeat). This puts it after 31 Jan 1986. Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 12 to 15): Markuse? News after the show talks of Baby Doc Duvalier being deposed last month. That was 6 Feb 1986, meaning this is March. The West Indies piling on the runs in the test in Barbados is presumably the third test, making this 21 Mar 1986. Dates mentioned for births and birthdays fit this week too. |
28 Mar 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSaxon live in concert at the Hammersmith Odeon, recorded on 18 Sep 1985 and previously broadcast on 25 Oct 1985. Date is confirmed through Tommy wishing us Happy Easter and news following the show detailing that the search for Sarah Harper's body was temporarily called off. Sarah Harper went missing on 26 Mar 1986. Easter in 1986 was on 30 Mar. |
4 Apr 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSessions by the Alliance (new, repeated on 13 Jun 1986) and Black Rose (repeat from 17 Jan 1986). Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 11-14) was chosen by Sandra Buck of Wilmslow, Cheshire. The date is clearly 1986 and after February, as Tommy identifies that when introducing the Diamond Head track. The Judas Priest tracks are from the new Turbo album which was released on 14 Apr 1986. Tommy announces at the end that next week will be Rush live at the PinkPop Festival in Holland 1979. A complaint about the length of that show was included on the 2 May 1986 show. It definitely wasn't 25 Apr 1986, so presumably the Rush broadcast was either 11 or 18 Apr 1986 and this either 4 or 11 Apr 1986. That's backed up by the BBC Genome which lists this show as 4 Apr 1986 with the Black Rose and Alliance sessions and the Rush concert as being on 11 Apr 1986. |
11 Apr 1986I can't provide this show listing but the BBC Genome lists it as including a Rush concert recorded in 1979. |
18 Apr 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesNot my recording. Thanks to the Friday Rock Show Wiki. |
25 Apr 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesRoger Waters live at Radio City Music Hall, recorded 28 Mar 1985. Show dates to 25 Apr 1986. News after the show includes 22 Libyans expelled from Britain arriving in Tripoli. This is confirmed by Tommy dedicating the Marillion song to Fish on his birthday. Tommy announces that next week will be Cannes and Statetrooper in session. |
2 May 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSessions by Statetrooper (repeat from 14 Feb 1986) and Cannes (new). Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 12 to 16): Richard Clay from Nelson, Lancashire. Date confirmed by Tommy's comments at the end of the previous week's show. |
9 May 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSession: Elixir (repeat). Lie Back and Enjoy It: Graham King of London. Date confirmed through news after the show: a 5.75% pay deal is agreed for teachers to end 15 months of disruption, the fire is out at Chernobyl (the meltdown was 26 Apr 1986) and by-elections include the Tories losing to the Alliance at Ryedale on 8 May 1986. |
16 May 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSession with the Huw Lloyd Langton Group. This was the first airing of the session. Interview with Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Date confirmed. The news immediately following the show mentions that there has been a bomb attack on the Paris headquarters of Interpol, which was in the early hours of 17 May 1986. |
23 May 1986This show listing is not complete, as it's missing the end.
NotesSession by Wild Strawberries (repeat from 21 Mar 1986). Lie Back and Enjoy It: Alison Wasson of London. The BBC Genome says that this show included the Wild Strawberries session. This is backed up by comments which indicate that Paul Samson's Empire had just recorded their session, which was first aired on 6 Jun 1986. |
30 May 1986This show listing is not complete, as it's missing the end and part of the beginning.
NotesMy recording begins with Tommy about to kick off the show with a 50 minute American concert recording but it promptly breaks and then resumes an hour later before Lie Back and Enjoy It, ending after 37m. A longer recording (94m) by Pete Watts includes most of the concert, which is by Mötley Crüe in Fresno, CA, the section I already had (with a minor gap as Lie Back and Enjoy It begins) and a couple more tracks after it. The concert seems to be edited. While Vince Neil does scream at Fresno, the setlist doesn't remotely match the only viable one currently available, which was at the Selland Arena in Fresno on 25 Nov 1985. Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 2 to 5) from Neil Robinson of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Tommy talks about the line-up for the Monsters of Rock festival in Donington in 1986 (which was 16 Aug 1986) and comments about the Hear 'n Aid album coming out 'soon' (it was released on 6 Jun 1986). The Pete Watts recording is dated 23 May 1986 but seems more likely to be 30 May 1986 because of the Wild Strawberries session being the week before. |
6 Jun 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSession: Paul Samson's Empire (repeated on 1 Aug 1986). Live concert: Twisted Sister at the 1982 Reading Festival. I dated this only to mid-1986 but the BBC Genome lists this show as including the Paul Samson's Empire session. |
13 Jun 1986This show listing is not complete, as it's missing the beginning.
Notes
Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 8-12): Alex Hitchins from Norwich. Session: The Alliance. There's a comment that identifies the date as Friday the 13th, and various comments date the show to 1986. This dates the show to 13 Jun 1986. The news afterwards confirms this as it includes the death of Benny Goodman. |
20 Jun 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesGuest host: Chris Tetley. Date is confirmed by the fact that it's in between the Annie Nightingale and Ian Gillan shows. Also before the Magnum track, he mentions Marillion's Garden Party at Milton Keynes next Saturday; that was 28 Jun 1986. Interview with Lemmy. This is the show where he recites the first verse of Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky. My recording hasn't aged well. Apparently Sony tapes are much more liable to warp than TDKs. Fortunately I used the latter for most of my recordings. |
27 Jun 1986This show listing is not complete, as it's missing the end.
NotesNot my recording. Thanks to the Friday Rock Show Wiki. Guest host: Ian Gillan. Ian Gillan chats with Roger Glover in between tracks for most of the show. |
4 Jul 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesHosted by Ian Gillan from Stowe, VT, where Deep Purple were recording their new album. From comments, this is presumably the second of two shows Gillan hosted while Tommy was on holiday. Gillan live at the Reading Festival in 1980. Cassette labelled with the date. Also confirmed by news after the show: PC Brian Chester is acquitted of the manslaughter of John Shorthouse, staff at the Risley Remand Centre walk out and a South African bomb injures 20 people. This is the Checkers supermarket bombing in Silverton. |
11 Jul 1986This show listing is not complete, as it's missing most of it.
NotesLie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 1-4): Neil Robinson of Jesmond, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. There's mention of rumours about the Monsters of Rock festival in Donington in 1986 (which was 16 Aug 1986), dating the show to early to mid 1986. Comments about Hear 'n Aid have the album coming out 'soon'. BBC Genome lists this show as including a session by Huw Lloyd Langton. |
18 Jul 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesDate confirmed: noted on the tape. Session: Excalibur. Interview with Biff Byford of Saxon. |
25 Jul 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesJethro Tull live at Heartbeat '86 Garden Party in Milton Keynes. Date confirmed. Written on the cassette. News during the show also talks about the first day's results from the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, which were held from 24 Jul-2 Aug 1986. |
1 Aug 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSession: Paul Samson's Empire (repeat). Lie Back and Enjoy It: Kevin Blanche (?) of Stoke on Trent. Date written on the cassette. News during the show also talks about Mrs. Thatcher visiting the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. 24 Jul-2 Aug 1986. |
8 Aug 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesMama's Boys live at Heartbeat '86 Garden Party in Milton Keynes. Lie Back and Enjoy It: Lawrence Mast of Tredegar. Date written on cassette. Confirmed by news during the show about Peter Robinson, the deputy leader of the DUP, being arrested the day before during the invasion of Clontibret on 7 Aug 1986. Tommy talks about Ozzy being on the show next week and Magnum being broadcast from the Garden Party in two weeks. |
15 Aug 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesRepeat session from Armistice, first broadcast on 20 Jun 1989. Interview with Ozzy Osbourne who will headline Donington the next night. There's also mention that Doro will be appearing on the bill. Date confirmed as 15 Aug. News after the show references deaths on K2 in 1986. In particular Alan Rouse and Julie Tullis were last seen 11 days ago. That was 4 Aug 1986. |
22 Aug 1986This show listing is not complete, as it's missing 40 minutes in the middle.
NotesMagnum live at Heartbeat '86 Garden Party in Milton Keynes. Date confirmed. Tommy announced the Magnum broadcast in a fortnight at the end of the 8 Aug show. Also news after the show includes John Stalker being reinstated as deputy chief constable of Greater Manchester and the second day of the final test at the Oval with New Zealand 257/8 and John Wright's fifth test century. That ran from 21-25 Aug 1986. |
29 Aug 1986I can't provide this show listing but BBC Genome says it includes a session by Persian Risk. |
5 Sep 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSession: Motörhead (its first airing) Lie Back and Enjoy It: Robert Coyne of London. One dedication is for a birthday on 8 Sep. The Iron Maiden song is from their current single, released 6 Sep 1986. The Motörhead session was recorded on 16 Aug 2006 and BBC Genome dates its first airing to 5 Sep 1986. |
12 Sep 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesGary Moore live at Heartbeat '86 Garden Party in Milton Keynes. This is certainly 1986 but I could only narrow it down to the three week period of 29 Aug to 12 Sep 1986. However fleshing out dates at BBC Genome leaves this as the only possible. |
19 Sep 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesDate confirmed. News during the show covers the Colwich train accident on 19 Sep 1986. Next week: Bruce Dickinson interview. |
26 Sep 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesInterview: Bruce Dickinson. Date is confirmed as 26 Sep 1986 through closing comments of the 19 Sep 1986 show which announce Bruce will guest the following week. Closing comments here are that the album is 'out now' (released 29 Sep 1986) but the tour is upcoming on Fri 3 Oct. |
3 Oct 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesHawkwind live at the Reading Festival 24 Aug 1986. Date confirmed. The Metallica track is in tribute to Cliff Burton who died 'the other day' on 27 Sep 1986. Tommy explains the new logic for Lie Back and Enjoy It, which includes a phone number so the requester can appear on the air. Closing comments highlight the session next week by Motörhead. |
10 Oct 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSession: Motorhead (repeat). Phil Campbell's son Dane was born the day before. Lie Back and Enjoy It: Kathryn from Macclesfield. This has a phone call following the selection, for the first time, as suggested in the 3 Oct 1986 show. Comments about Forcefield reference the previous playing of the track in September (the 19 Sep 1986 show). Closing comments announce Warlock live from Donington next week. |
17 Oct 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesWarlock live from Castle Donington Monsters of Rock Festival 1986. Date is confirmed from the closing comments of the previous show, referencing the Warlock concert. Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 10-14): Neil Bisley of Tonbridge. |
24 Oct 1986This show listing is complete.

31 Oct 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesRough Cutt live at the Reading Festival 24 Aug 1986. Date confirmed: it's Halloween. Girlschool session coming on 14 Nov 1986. |
7 Nov 1986?This show listing is believed to be complete.
NotesThe date isn't confirmed, but the best guess is 7 Nov 1986 to fit in between known shows. Certainly this comes after 10 Oct 1986 as Lie Back and Enjoy It has a phone call. Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks 11-15): Dave Leonard from Banstead, Surrey. Skagarack live at the Reading Festival 1986. |
14 Nov 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesSession: Girlschool (new). Lie Back and Enjoy It (tracks : Andy Page of Swansea. Date: 14 Nov 1986, as per closing comments of the 31 Oct 1986 show and confirmed by the news: US imposing sanctions on Syria. The Gary Moore track has been used often as a backing track, especially over the closing comments. First three tracks identified from a recording other than mine. Thanks to the Friday Rock Show Wiki. |
21 Nov 1986This show listing is complete.
NotesThe Outlaws live at the Reading Festival 1986 Tommy mentions at the outset that this is the 8th birthday programme. Date confirmed from the news after the show. Margaret Thatcher and François Mitterrand met about nuclear disarmament. |
28 Nov 1986This show listing is a work in progress.

26 Dec 1986This show listing is complete.
